Ville Svensson is not arriving in Oskarshamn as an untested junior. At 21, developed in Mörrum, he had already played 68 SHL games plus seven playoff games for Växjö before IK brought him to Oskarshamn.
That is also where the interesting part begins. In Växjö he was a young player in a club with several recent Swedish championships, but hardly the same supporter culture or closeness between team, town and stands that exists in Oskarshamn. His role there was different. Here, more than anything, we hope Ville gets time to find his place – and that the town does not decide too early what he is or is not.
So far in preseason, Ville has been fairly anonymous. That is not criticism, just our impression. He has not been the player making us spill the coffee or demand his own line after a few exhibition games. But it is preseason. Plenty of players struggle to reach their maximum when the games do not quite count yet – much like the stands rarely operate at playoff level in September either.
There are still things to like. He works hard, looks like a good teammate and is not afraid to play uncomfortable hockey. There is grit there. Most importantly, you can see there is hockey in him even when he is not the most visible player. He feels like someone who may slip under the radar early and grow with the team rather than needing to win preseason.
The move from limited minutes in Växjö to a different and potentially larger role in IK does not have to happen in three exhibition games. This season is about giving Ville the chance to turn what he learned in the SHL into something of his own in Oskarshamn. For that, both the team and Little Naples need to give him some room to work.
Our first impression is therefore cautiously positive. Not because Ville has stood out the most – he has not – but because the raw material looks interesting. Hard work, a bit of edge and enough hockey ability for something more to grow.
Sometimes the player you notice least in preseason is the one you wonder how you ever managed without in January. We are not there yet. But Ville has given us reason to keep watching.
