Pontus Näsén looks set to miss Wednesday’s away game against Leksand.
Barometern-OT reports that the IK defenceman was forced to leave after taking a hit and is now being assessed. Sporting director Arsi Piispanen tells the newspaper that the club does not believe the injury is as serious as Manuel Ågren’s, but that Näsén is in pain. Asked whether he will play against Leksand, Piispanen says he does not think so.
That is the verified part. The rest is our reading of what his absence would mean.
Näsén is the established offensive engine on IK’s blue line. When he left the game against Vimmerby, much of the offensive responsibility among the defencemen fell to 18-year-old Axel Elofsson. It is an interesting opportunity for the junior, but not a reasonable long-term division of labour if Näsén is out for more than one game.
Manuel Ågren is also missing further up the line-up. He should not be confused with the situation on defence, but his absence means IK are already without one of their intended offensive difference-makers. If the team also lose Näsén against Leksand, they will be missing another player normally expected to drive play with the puck.
There may also be a small subplot in the team selection. Hugo Allvin came through Leksand’s junior system and could be an option if IK need another defenceman. It has not been confirmed that he will get the opportunity, but if he does, it will be a special away game for him.
The most important thing right now, however, is Näsén’s status. According to Piispanen, the club does not believe it is as bad as Ågren’s injury. That is the positive part. Until there is a clearer update, IK should still plan for Wednesday as though their most important offensive defenceman will not play.
UPDATE, TUESDAY EVENING: Barometern-OT writes in its latest HockeyAllsvenskan round-up that Näsén will not travel to Leksand. The same report says Manuel Ågren and Filip Sveningsson will also be absent, while U20 forward Melker Vidsäter will travel with the senior team. That strengthens the expectation that Näsén will miss the game, but IK have yet to publish an official line-up. We therefore treat this as Barometern-OT’s pre-game reporting—not as an injury or line-up update independently confirmed by us.
Vidsäter at least provides another option at forward. On defence, the fundamental question remains unchanged: if Näsén is absent, IK must replace their most important offensive defenceman, and we will not know who actually steps in until the line-up is released.
