Now comes the real test – can IK's offensive lift hold against Kalmar?

IK enter the county derby on two straight wins and with an 8–2 rout behind them. Kalmar are fourth and also played yesterday. Matt Brown remains a small question mark after the kneeing hit, but he may well play – and that uncertainty is another reminder of the value of greater offensive depth.

THE GLID INTE CASE

The 8–2 win over Almtuna was a statement.

It was not necessarily proof.

That test may come tonight.

Kalmar arrive at Be-Ge Hockey Center fourth in HockeyAllsvenskan with 24 points from eleven games. IK are sixth on 19 after twelve. Kalmar, just like IK, played yesterday and lost 1–2 after a shootout against MoDo – while outshooting them 36–28.

So this is not a rested top side waiting for a tired IK. Both teams are on the back end of a back-to-back.

That makes the test cleaner.

Can IK carry the offensive confidence from the 8–2 win into a game against a clearly stronger opponent and create the same sustained attacks, the same variety of threats and the same willingness to go forward?

The 8–2 was about more than goals

The most interesting thing against Almtuna was not simply that the puck kept going in.

It was how many different threats IK created.

Ville Svensson scored a hat-trick. Joel Svensson had a goal and three assists. Daniyal Dzhaniyev produced 1+2. Filip Sveningsson had three assists. Melker Eriksson had 1+1. Calle Karlsson and Herman Hansson scored. Axel Elofsson had two assists.

IK could move the puck, switch sides, sustain possessions and get different units involved.

That is exactly the direction we want to see more of.

Kalmar are likely to give up less space and punish mistakes more efficiently. That should give us a much better answer to whether IK's offence has genuinely taken a step – or whether Almtuna simply became one of those nights when everything opened up.

Brown is a question mark – no more than that

Matt Brown was caught by a kneeing hit in the second period against Almtuna.

He made his own way to the bench, but we did not see him play afterwards.

It may simply have been precaution in a game that was already getting away from Almtuna. Brown may well play tonight.

But we do not know.

At the time of writing there is no new official lineup and no confirmed information that Brown is injured or unavailable. We therefore will not write that he is missing the game.

Until the lineup arrives, Brown is therefore a question mark – but no more than that.

At the same time, the situation is another reminder of why we still want another forward with genuine offensive quality.

This is not only about scoring more goals

When we talk about top-end depth, we do not mean another body for the fourth line.

We mean another forward who can play high in the lineup when needed. Someone who can carry the puck, extend a possession, move defenders around and give the coaches more workable combinations.

If Brown plays tonight, that need still exists.

If he does not, the point simply becomes easier to see.

A team with serious ambitions cannot become dramatically easier to defend every time one skilled forward is unavailable. More quality options make Brown better when he plays, Calle better, Joel better and the entire team harder to match against.

That is why we would still rather put the next investment there than force a goaltending signing.

Emil Vuorio had a few untidy moments against Almtuna, but he also made several very good saves. We still do not know that the goaltending is broken.

We do know that more offensive quality gives IK more ways to win hockey games.

Make what you already do well even better.

Kalmar only took one point – but pushed MoDo hard

Kalmar lost 1–2 after a shootout yesterday.

That could look like a small setback after a strong stretch, but the game tells a little more. Kalmar won the shot count 36–28 and Brett Brochu stopped 27 of 28 shots during play.

They are fourth for a reason.

This will be very different from the Almtuna game once IK took control.

At the same time, Kalmar are dealing with exactly the same compressed schedule. There is no excuse for IK to look like the team that played yesterday while the opponent looks fresh.

Preseason gave one win each

The teams met twice before the league season.

IK won 4–3 after a shootout at home on 2 September. Kalmar won the return game 4–2 on 11 September.

That does not tell us who is better now.

It does tell us that the teams know each other, and IK have no reason to enter this county derby with caution disguised as respect.

Respect Kalmar, absolutely.

Fear them, no.

Familiar faces

There is also plenty of IK history on the other side.

Hugo Jonasson, Hampus Plato, Jonathan Andersson, Henrik Nilsson and Viktor Smeds are all in the Kalmar environment and have previous IK connections.

That is a detail, not the main story.

The main story is IK.

Two straight wins. Sixth place. An offence that has just exploded. An unresolved question around Brown. And an opponent good enough to test whether what we saw yesterday actually travels.

What we want to see

We want IK to be brave again.

Not chase another 8–2. Not play recklessly.

But keep the same idea: own the puck, create multiple threats, make Kalmar defend and turn the game into something more than waiting for mistakes.

We want to see whether Vuorio and the defensive structure continue giving each other better working conditions.

We want to see how much energy remains in the legs less than a day after the rout.

And above all, we want to see the lineup.

If Brown is there, the concern can ease immediately.

If he is not, we have a very concrete example of why the next offensive investment is not a luxury.

It is about building a team that still has several ways to win when something happens.
