IK threw away control, fell 4–2 behind, then refused to die. Danny pulled one back, Hallquisth tied it and Joel Svensson won it in overtime.
This should have been three points.
It became two.
And those two points may say more about this IK team than a comfortable regulation win would have.
The first period was even, with a slight IK edge. Then Joel Svensson collected the puck almost in his own zone, carried it through the ice, beat defenders and finished the move himself. It was the first real exclamation mark of the night.
IK made it 2–0 through Calle Karlsson after a superb feed from Matt Brown. Calle keeps producing, while Brown keeps growing on us. At 2–0, IK had the game exactly where they wanted it. BIK had created very little.
BIK's first came on the power play and appeared from the stands to take a deflection off an IK skate. What followed had much less to do with bad luck.
IK completely lost their structure for 2–2, took another penalty and conceded 2–3 on the power play. Jeff Jakobs called timeout. IK pushed back – and then broke down again. BIK were handed a two-on-zero and suddenly it was 2–4.
Karlskoga had not played Oskarshamn off the ice. Oskarshamn had played themselves into trouble.
This was youthful enthusiasm in both its best and worst forms. The offensive skill was there, but when the game needed calming down, IK lacked experience and risk management. That is where the need for veteran depth returns. The talent is already here. To turn nights like this into three points consistently, this roster still needs more experience, particularly up front.
IK did not fold.
They kept creating, hit the crossbar and continued to push. Danny Dzhaniyev made it 3–4. Danny can drift out of games at times, but he has a nose for important goals. Give him time.
Then Theodor Hallquisth made it 4–4.
This young IK team can be naive and make costly mistakes. But it does not lie down. It fights its way back. That matters.
4–4 after 60 minutes. Overtime.
Joel Svensson won it.
The player who had already scored the finest goal of the night also secured the second point.
5–4.
The announced attendance was just over 2,000 sold or registered tickets. That is not the same thing as the number of people physically in the arena, and the stands looked considerably thinner.
This team has started well. It is young, skilled and occasionally frustrating. Tonight it threw away a 2–0 lead, fought back from 2–4 and still found a way to win.
Oskarshamn needs to respond in the stands.
The team needs experience and depth. But the team also needs its town.
It should have been three. It became two.
IK showed why the roster still needs strengthening. It also showed why this season feels different.
Youth will cost points and momentum sometimes. But when everything was falling apart, IK got back up.
Danny. Hallquisth. And finally Joel Svensson.
Of course Joel.
Two points after a self-inflicted collapse – but the comeback says plenty about this IK team.
