IK collapse in Västerås – 5–1 and a night to forget

Published Friday, 2 October 2026 at 21:57 · Updated Friday, 16 October 2026 at 12:56 · SVENSKA →

IK scored with their first shot. Then came the sloppy decisions, penalties and mistakes. Västerås won 5–1 in IK’s weakest performance of the season so far.

It started strangely well on the scoreboard.

Västerås were sharper from the opening faceoff. After six minutes IK still had no shot on goal. Then their first shot arrived. Matt Brown scored. 0–1.

That was about as good as the evening got.

Pretty at times – far too complicated

IK improved slightly after the goal and had several power-play opportunities. Joel Svensson and Axel Elofsson produced some lovely puck movement. It looked good. It rarely became dangerous enough.

Too much passing, too much searching for one more play. Late in the third IK even created what was almost an open net – and passed once more instead of shooting.

No goal. That sequence summed up the night.

Jakobs tried to calm a young team

With less than two minutes left in the first period, Jeff Jakobs called timeout.

According to Matt Brown, the message was essentially that IK were doing too much, drifting away from the plan and needed to calm down and think.

It was not a dressing-down. It was an attempt to settle a young team.

A difficult night for Elofsson

IK created a few better sequences early in the second. Calle Karlsson had a good chance, Filiph Engsund attacked the rebound and Ville and Joel Svensson pinned Västerås in their zone.

Then Axel Elofsson turned the puck over in the offensive zone. Västerås countered two-on-one and made it 1–1.

Later Elofsson became stuck behind his own net in another awkward sequence. Västerås capitalised again for 2–1.

A very difficult night for the young defenceman. That is also where the judgement should stop. Young players will have nights like this. Shake it off and move on.

Nyman was given too little help

Axel Nyman was not seriously tested early, but looked calm when Västerås began to push.

At 2–1 he made two excellent saves on the penalty kill. Then IK made an awful line change and Västerås were left completely open for 3–1.

There is little reason to make Nyman the story of this defeat. The team in front of him gave him too little help.

The third only got worse

Calle Karlsson took a penalty inside the opening minute and Västerås immediately scored 4–1 on the power play.

Ludvig Georgsson then took a double minor for high-sticking. IK killed the four minutes, but Västerås hardly needed to force the issue.

IK kept taking penalties when they needed to chase. Eventually it became 5–1.

The worst performance so far – move on quickly

For us, this was IK’s weakest performance of the season so far.

It does not have to mean more than that. Good teams play terrible games too. Analyse it, learn from it and move on quickly.

But there is another issue that cannot simply be brushed aside.

The roster needs experienced quality depth

IK were without Pontus Näsén, Ludvig Östman, Manuel Ågren and Filip Sveningsson.

That does not automatically explain a 5–1 defeat. IK lost this game through a poor collective performance, bad decisions, sloppy play and too many penalties.

But the roster question existed before Västerås and remains after Västerås.

Over a full season, the answer cannot be to fill every gap with juniors and temporary loans and simply wait for everyone to return.

The juniors should play. They should make mistakes. They should develop. They should not be asked to carry an ambition to remain among the top teams in HockeyAllsvenskan.

IK need experienced quality depth. Ideally two established forwards who can help now and remain useful when the squad is healthy again.

And with reports of significant SHL interest in Calle Karlsson, it is also about showing the best players what IK actually intend to build.

If promotion is the ambition, it is time to demonstrate that ambition through action.

Not after Christmas.

Now.

A terrible game should be shaken off. A thin roster should not be ignored.
