Hugo Allvin needs to grow into senior hockey, not be rushed into it.
The 19-year-old defenceman saw plenty of action during IK's preseason and has already shown that he can function in the senior environment. But when the league season began, he was not one of the seven defencemen dressed for the opener. Instead, he played a preseason game with Västervik.
We think that makes sense.
Allvin needs games more than he needs to sit as an eighth defenceman watching HockeyAllsvenskan from the stands. Against Vita Hästen he was directly involved in Västervik's first goal. His puck toward the net created the rebound that Sebastian Kjellén converted, and the match statistics credited Allvin with a point.
He then played again for Västervik against Boro/Vetlanda, where VIK coach Joakim Hagelin singled him out as one of the players who performed well.
That is roughly the path we hope IK continues to use.
Allvin still has some distance to cover before he is a clear top-seven defenceman in HockeyAllsvenskan. That is not a failure. He is young, comes from Leksand's junior programme and chose Oskarshamn specifically to take the next step. He also comes across as a serious player who wants to improve and understands that development is about more than simply being listed on a senior roster.
Junior hockey can still give him games and responsibility. But regular senior minutes in HockeyEttan, for example with Västervik, may be even more valuable. There he gets to face adult players, make decisions under heavier pressure and become genuinely comfortable in senior hockey.
The door to IK should of course remain open.
When injuries come, or when he simply earns the opportunity, he should be able to step in a little more prepared than the time before. It is entirely possible that Hugo Allvin can compete for a regular shirt by the spring.
That does not need to be the target in September.
For now, getting a little better every day is enough. A little calmer on the puck. A little quicker in his decisions. A little more at home in senior hockey.
If he does that, the opportunity will come. And when it does, he should be ready to take it.
