IK Oskarshamn have now confirmed that the club are bringing in Olle Karlsson on loan from Växjö Lakers. The 17-year-old joins immediately and, according to the club, will be part of the team for the entire season. Initially, he will move back and forth between the clubs to provide cover until Peter Cehlárik joins Växjö.
Karlsson is 17 and comes from Boro/Vetlanda. He has opened the U20 season with three goals in three games and has already had a taste of senior hockey in Växjö’s organisation.
There is more to make his profile interesting. The Hockey News has named Karlsson as one of five players to watch in Sweden ahead of the 2027 NHL Draft. He was also part of Sweden’s U18 national team when they won World Championship gold this spring.
Arsi Piispanen describes Karlsson as a young and exciting player who is good all over the ice and already plays with maturity beyond his years. That adds some nuance to the draft interest: the upside is there, but above all, IK appear to be getting a young player already considered capable of doing a job in senior hockey.
A 17-year-old still should not be expected to fill Manuel Ågren’s skates. But with Ågren projected to be out for four to six weeks, and IK now saying the loan will run for the entire season, the situation looks less urgent than it did a day earlier.
