Ludvig Georgsson is big and tall, but size is not the only thing that makes him interesting. For a defenceman with that frame, he skates well and has good technique. There is more hockey in him than the measurements alone suggest.
He joined IK late last season after a route from Tullinge through Södertälje’s junior system and senior hockey with Segeltorp, Väsby and Almtuna. His first 12 regular-season games in Oskarshamn were a fairly short introduction. He did not look out of place, but at times he struggled to really establish himself after arriving in a new team and system midway through the season.
The situation is different now. Georgsson has had a full summer and preseason with IK. The system is starting to become more natural, and he looks increasingly comfortable in his surroundings. That also makes the next step clearer.
We want to see more of the physical game. With that body, he should be able to become a little nastier to play against, own more space around his net and make life uncomfortable for opposing forwards. That does not mean chasing hits for the sake of it. It means using an advantage he already has.
The interesting part is that physicality does not have to define him. His skating and technique suggest there is upside with the puck too, and our feeling throughout his time with IK is that we have not really seen his ceiling yet. He has not done anything badly enough to worry us. It feels more like there is still a sizeable part of the player waiting to come out.
That makes Georgsson difficult to judge for now. We are cautiously positive. If he can combine the size and mobility with a slightly meaner defensive game, he has every chance of becoming the kind of defenceman supporters quickly appreciate. We also suspect there are more points in him than he has shown for IK so far.
His contract runs through 2028. There is time. Now we want to see what happens when Ludvig Georgsson starts using the whole toolbox.
