Axel Elofsson is 18 and entering his first full senior season with IK on loan from Örebro. It is easy to see why both clubs believe in him. He produced 41 points – nine goals and 32 assists – in 32 U20 Nationell games, has already made his SHL debut and won U18 World Championship gold with Sweden in 2026. He added four assists in seven games at the tournament.
The first thing that stands out is the skating. His speed, technique and hands allow him to carry the puck and create something when the game gets static. That is also what makes his upside especially interesting for IK. Pontus Näsén carried a large share of the offence from the blue line last season with 30 points in 49 games. Elofsson does not need to become another Näsén, but IK need more defencemen who can move the game forward. He can potentially give them a second dimension.
Preseason has offered small glimpses. He already had two assists in the early games and often looks comfortable with the puck. At the same time, this is his first full senior year. There are situations to improve in his own zone and sometimes the risks show that come with a young offensive defenceman. We do not want that instinct coached out of him. The job is to learn when the risk is worth taking.
The bigger question is responsibility. Elofsson is here to develop, not to solve IK's entire offence from the blue line by himself. If he gets room to use his strengths, make mistakes and grow into senior hockey, the curve could be very interesting. If too much responsibility lands on him too early, there is a risk that the qualities that make him exciting become restricted instead.
Örebro have him under contract through 2027/28 and have loaned him out for the full season. That says plenty about the assignment: Oskarshamn is supposed to be the place where one of Swedish junior hockey's most productive defencemen starts becoming a senior player for real.
We expect peaks and dips. The important thing is not that Axel Elofsson looks finished in September. It is that he looks better in November, January and March. The speed and the tools are already there. Now the test begins.
