Östersund preview: Will Nyman get his chance – and what is the plan in goal?

Who starts against Östersund? Nyman impressed on his competitive debut against these same opponents. With two home games in less than a day, IK need both help in goal and better defending.

THE GLID INTE CASE

Who starts in goal against Östersund? That is our first question before Friday night at BEGE. Emil Vuorio was given the start again in Visby and made several important saves in the 6–3 win. Now IK face two home games in less than a day: Östersund on Friday and MoDo on Saturday.

That makes Axel Nyman's situation particularly interesting. Does he get his chance now – or could he be leaving? We have no confirmed information that Nyman is leaving IK. This is a question about the role the club intends to give him, not a claim that a transfer has been agreed.

Nyman has already delivered against Östersund

There is a specific reason to raise the question against these opponents. When IK beat Östersund 4–1 on 25 September, Nyman made his first competitive start for the club. IK's own report described a strong performance and a save percentage above 94.

One good evening should not determine every subsequent selection. But it is a reminder that Nyman has already shown he can contribute. Provided he is fit and available, it is reasonable to ask when he will next be trusted to start, particularly with the games so close together.

Nyman was announced as a season-long loan from Rögle. If that plan has changed, we would like to know. If it remains in place, we want to see how IK intend to use him. Simply continuing to discuss a new goalkeeper tells us little about the plan for the goalkeeper already alongside Vuorio.

Vuorio needs help – including in front of him

We still believe Vuorio needs support, preferably from an established first-choice goalkeeper. But the Visby game also showed why changing the goalkeeper cannot be the entire solution.

IK allowed rebounds, deflections and breakaways far too easily. A 1–4 away lead became 3–4 uncomfortably quickly in a game where the difference in quality was otherwise clear. Vuorio had to deal with situations the players in front of him should have handled better.

Whoever starts against Östersund, the defending must improve. We miss the stability provided by Malmström's type of game and the experience Younan contributed. Pontus Näsén brings experience and attacking quality, but he is not the same type of defenceman as Malmström. One does not automatically replace the other.

Oskarshamn's own are leading the way

The positives from Gotland should not disappear behind the criticism. Filiph Engsund scored three times in the opening period. Manne Ågren and Calle Karlsson added goals. The local trio accounted for five of IK's six before Filip Sveningsson scored his first league goal of the season.

Joel Svensson recorded four assists and Axel Elofsson three. Four goals came on the power play. That attacking quality should travel home with IK, even if some individual advantages were much weaker than the overall return suggests.

Against Östersund, we want the same finishing ability without the same generosity at the other end. IK should not need six goals to feel comfortable with a lead.

Friday is not a warm-up for Saturday

Saturday's jersey retirement for Jonas Engström and the game against MoDo will understandably receive plenty of attention. But Östersund must be dealt with first. Friday's points are no less valuable because the following day carries more history.

IK won the previous meeting 4–1. That is background, not a result to lean on. We want a team that takes responsibility in its own zone and delivers a complete game, rather than relying on the local scorers to repair every mistake.

The first announcement we await is the choice of goalkeeper. Then we want a defence that helps whoever gets the opportunity. Nyman or Vuorio: the requirement for the team in front is the same.

IK host Östersunds IK at Be-Ge Hockey Center on Friday 30 October, with faceoff at 19:00 local time. No starting goalkeeper has been confirmed in the material on which this preview is based.

The assessments of goalkeeper selection, defending and recruitment needs are GLID INTE's own.
