Barometern-OT now has a clearer update following Manuel Ågren’s medical examination. Sporting director Arsi Piispanen says the prognosis is four to six weeks before IK has a healthy Manne back on the ice.
“Only” is relative, of course. IK will be without one of its most important forwards for the season opener and probably well into October. But the rumour that his entire season could be in jeopardy can now be put aside. This is clearly better news.
At the same time, the picture surrounding the loan of Olle Karlsson is becoming clearer. Piispanen says the plan is for the 17-year-old to remain with IK for the entire season, although Växjö will have the final say based on its own needs. Karlsson may initially spend some time in Växjö while Peter Cehlárik joins up, but the aim is to avoid him constantly moving back and forth.
Piispanen describes Karlsson as hardworking, a strong skater and mature for his age—more of a grafter than a pure offensive scoring machine. That also adds some nuance to our initial impression of him. The draft interest and offensive upside are there, but above all, IK appear to be bringing in a young player who is already considered capable of doing the work in senior hockey.
And there is no need to speculate about his debut. Piispanen confirms that Karlsson will play against Visby/Roma.
A 17-year-old still should not be expected to fill Manuel Ågren’s skates. But the combination of a significantly better injury prognosis and a loan intended to last for the season makes the situation less urgent than it appeared 24 hours ago.
