Manuel Ågren is a doubt for Friday’s HockeyAllsvenskan opener against Visby/Roma.
Barometern-OT reported on 16 September that Ågren is not training on the ice after having to leave the final preseason game against Kalmar. Sporting director Arsi Piispanen says it is doubtful the forward can play and that the club is still waiting for an update.
That is where the verified injury information ends for now. There is no confirmed timetable for how long Ågren could be out.
The sporting impact can still be discussed. Ågren joins IK after 43 SHL games and 13 points for Växjö last season and is expected to be much more than another body in the forward group. IK also entered the season with thin forward depth. If this proves to be a short absence, internal cover may be enough. If it becomes longer, the requirement changes. In our view, IK would then need to replace quality rather than simply fill a roster spot.
Homegrown forward Albin Laksonen is an interesting player to give opportunities. He is now with Tyringe and offers energy and development upside, but it would be unreasonable to expect him to immediately replace an established top forward. Regular responsibility in HockeyEttan may still be important for his own development.
Separately, IK are still looking for reinforcements. In an interview with HockeyNews on 15 September, Piispanen said the club remains in the market and that, broadly speaking, an SHL loan is the route he expects for a possible addition. Miks Indrašis has appeared on lists, but IK had not taken that any further. Barometern’s Jesper Hallberg has also separately written that the talk reaching him is that IK are working to bring in an SHL loan. That is an attributed journalistic report, not a confirmed signing.
The Miks track therefore becomes interesting again if Ågren’s absence proves extended. We have argued for that route before because documented offensive quality of that level is different from adding depth. But the same boundary applies: nothing is done, and we still do not know how long Ågren will be out.
There is no reason to invent an injury timetable before IK has an answer. There is, however, reason to understand the consequence: the longer one of the team’s important forwards is missing, the less useful it is simply to find somebody who can fill a jersey.
